What was the motivation behind this article?

I have been paying my AirTel mobile bills through ECS facility from the past two years. There has never been a late payment, ever. Because I will no longer have the savings account that is linked to the ECS facility, I approached AirTel to get it canceled. Imagine my shock when the customer representative coolly said, “Sir, we will charge you five-hundred rupees for that.” My mind blanked for a few seconds. Five-hundred rupees to cancel! The customer rep further went on to say that the five-hundred rupees would be taken as a security deposit, and which could be adjusted against future bills. I had had enough. I told him “No, thank you. I will cancel my connection. Could you please tell me the procedure to do that?”

And today, I have it canceled.

I have been using an airtel postpaid connection for a year now..9967743339.Last week someone from airtel visited my premises to verify my address and the next thing I know is 3 days from then my SIM card has been blocked under FMS(Fraud management services) and nobody at customer care is able to tell me why.I called in 3 times..

    1) Ist answer…ur services will be reactivated in 2 hrs..and hung up
2)2nd call..cant reactivate ur account..u will have to go to a customer care centre..escalated to supervisor and then hung up
3)3rd time I called to cancel and now am told I cant even cancel on the phone !!!and have to approach the customer care centre…what the heck?

Because somebody at airtel filled in their forms incorrectly I am supposed to search for an airtel centre and cancel my account?why cant I make the cancellation on the phone?

I am thinking of approaching consumer court for this…people should not be inconvenienced because someone at the company messed up..Any advice…my number is 9967743339

  8. 500 deposit is justified. All businesses do this for safety and risk avoidance. With ECS, your mobile provider had a control on your payments, so they don’t have much risk, and hence wont expect a deposit. When you remove that ECS, your mobile provider has no way to ensure you will pay for dues, and hence as a precaution keeps a deposit. So even if you default, the loss incurred to the service provider is mitigated.
    Its business, nothing personal!
