in Finance

Thanks for visiting Capital Advisor. I frequently update this blog to cover various topics on personal finance such as investment strategies, financial products that you should buy and ones that you really should stay away from, financial calculators, emerging themes such as early retirement and financial independence, and much more. You can Subscribe through Email and receive new articles directly in your Inbox or you can Subscribe through the RSS Feed and receive new articles in your feed reader.

Vocation, Career, and Job.

I think these definitions are spot-on: A job is simply any situation where you are paid in exchange for your labor. A career is a sequence of jobs in a similar field that ideally lead to promotion within that field. A vocation is what you were born to do. Your vocation and career might overlap — or they might not.

Personally, I’m trying to figure out the relationship between my vocation(s) (a passion for personal finance, travel, and trekking) and my career (software product management).

How about you?

Thanks for reading this article. I'd love to hear your opinion. Please use the comments section below to share your thoughts. I frequently write new articles that also cover several other aspects of personal finance including credit cards, financial goals, health insurance, income tax, life insurance, mutual funds, retirement planning, and much more. I don’t think you were born to do personal finance. You seem to asking for advice in each of your post than providing content. You should probably change you blogs name to capital advisory!!

@james:

Well, if you do peruse the content, you will find that I first pitch in my thoughts before opening the topic up for discussion. Personal finance is all about learning — from your experiences and from that of others.

Now, what do you think? :-)

well…then ask whether your passion can make you a decent living? If the answer is a solid YES then go for it!!!!!!

@ Ankur:

Not yet. :-)

But, apart from the financial aspect, I’m also trying to figure out if there exists an intersection between these slash careers.

Ones vocation and career should overlap for true happiness. Unfortunately we are not taught that in schools. Most people end up choosing jobs because of peer pressure and not because of passion.
Vocation and hobbies/interests have a thin line. In fact it should be thicker. One shouldn’t mistake hobbies for a vocation. Ideally if one chooses a vocation as career they must be pretty good at it. Otherwise it could be miserable mentally and financially.
