A commendable achievement by Baba Amte at Anandvan is the establishment of special schools for deaf, dumb, and blind children. These kids are indeed special. They have learnt to accept their disabilities, but do not let that fact hinder their creativity and capability. They are happy and content in their little world at Anandvan. They do not get to see many outsiders and so an outsider visit such as ours is greeted with big smiles and a warm heart. It’s really a touching scene.

Here is one creative guy. His real talent at sketching is featured below. He had a book full of sketches - KR Narayanan, Swami Vivekananda, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Lokamanya Tilak, Subash Chandra Bose, Gauthama Buddha et al. Fascinating!

A sketch of India’s President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. If only Dr. Kalam could have a look…

And not to be left behind, our shirtless hero Salman Khan.

They taught us the basics of Braille and made it sound so simple! English and Mathematics - these kids quickly do it in Braille.

And to think we complain about our textbooks.

Saying Adios.

Hi Avinash,
Warora Railway Station to Anandwan is walking distance. You can also take an autorickshaw or join others in a shared autorick. If you go by the Maha Mandal Bus you get down at the Anandwan Chowk. Cross the chowk and you will see Anand Niketan Colleges of Arts, Science and Commerce. Go a bit further and you enter the main gate of Anandwan. A little further on the Chimur Road you also see the complexes of the Anand Niketan Krishi Mahavidylaya. Have a nice time and when you visit the school convey my regards to my friends Sudhakar Kadu Guruji and Kavishwar Kaka.

On 9th of February Baba Amte’s first death anniversary was observed at Anandwan with the customary zeal for hard work and nation building aspirations. School going children from the Anandwan School for the Visually Impaired sang patriotic songs around Baba Amte’s Samadhi. A few thousands of well wishers and citizens of Anandwan joined the congregation silently meditating on the lofty principles and spiritual thoughts of Baba Amte.
Dr. Vikas Amte who has spent all his life at Anandwan was full of praise and admiration for his able- bodied collaborators, leprosy combatants and all their Allies who are carrying the dream of Baba Amte forward with utmost commitment and dedication.
Historian and Professor Emeritus Dr. Somnath Rode, School for Visually Impaired HM Shri Sudhakar Kadu and Sandhiniketan Chief Shri Sadashiv Tajne who along with Dr. Vikas had accompanied “Swar Anandwan” on its 24 days tour of Maharashtra praised the people of Marathwada and Paschim Maharashtra who came in thousands to witness the 20 performances of Anandwan artists. Singers, dancers, musicians and technicians numbering over 120 differently-abled individuals enthralled lovers of art and culture where ever they went despite their disabilities and handicaps. All of them returned to Anandwan on the eve of Baba Amte’s first death anniversary to be around the Samadhi of one who provided them with space and opportunities to remake and reshape their lives and live in dignity and solidarity with the rest of mankind.
Amtes Kaustubh, Sheetal, Pallavi and Gautam along with Dr. Vijay Pole, Gokul Incharge Kavishwar Kaka, Sitakant Prabhu, Mumbai’s Swamiji Thakkar and Chandatai Athle joined the multitude in the memorial service.
Life long admirer and companion Sadhnatai sprinkled flowers and lit fragrant agarbattis around the Samadhi of her beloved husband. Later, on the 15th of February, 83 years old Sadhnatai travelled to Dattapur in Wardha to take part in the 29th death anniversay liturgy of Shri Manoharjee Diwan, the founder of Maharogi Sewa Mandal, the very first Leprosy Rehab Centre by an Indian leader in our country.
The beautiful work of Baba Amte is being carried forward by his sons, his grand children and hundreds of differently-abled combatants and their Allies. Somnath, Jhari Zamani, Hemelkasa, Ashokwan, Nagepalli and Anandwan continue to attract admirers and well-wishers from across the Planet. Our leprosy combatants through their hard work and never-say-die spirit keep on inspiring one and all.

A couple of days ago we observed the 2nd death anniversary of the passing away of our beloved Baba Amte. Admirers and well wishers from far and near, school and college going youth, faculty members, hospital staff, young and senior citizens of MSS communes gathered at the Samadhi for a short inter-faith memorial prayer service. Throughout the day visitors kept coming to Anandwan and heading straight to the Shraddhavan.
Blind artists from Sandhiniketan sang devotional and patriotic songs that touched the hearts of one and all and brought back nostalgic memories of the life and times when the immensely kind hearted Baba Amte went about conscientizing and sensitizing Society through his struggle for justice, equality, empowerment and human rights.
SwarAnandwan maestro Akash Bhaisare led the singing and was assisted by Bandu Telang on the Tabla and Ganesh Kambli with the harmonium. Sharda Dhumane, Achal, Sandhya, Snehal, Savita, Sarika and the compact choir made up of differently-abled youngsters sang bhajans and patriotic songs some penned by Sane Guruji and Baba Amte himself. Jagame Sachho Tera Naam, Ragapathi Ragav, Vaishnavo Janato, Itni Shakti, Khara to ekachi Dharm-Jagala prem arpave, Dekha mandir-chitt mandir, Shankala, Manus mhaze nau, Jodo Bharat and Shivo Hum- Shivo Hum-Shivo Swarup Hum created an atmosphere of prayer and thanksgiving. The Almighty Giver of Life was being profusely thanked for giving Baba Amte as gift to Society.
Uttarayan veterans Pushpa Tai, Yashodabai Nikane, Laximibai, Sumanbai and Dixit Maushi despite physical limitations took part in the 45 minutes memorial liturgy.
Loyalists Madhubhai Pandit, Dagdu Lomte, Chanda Athle and many others had come from far.
Sadhnatai Amte led the services by sprinkling flower petals on the tomb of her life partner. Bharati Amte, Kaustubh and Pallavi, Medical Superintendent Dr. V.G.Pole, Kavishwar, Prabhu Kaka, Sarpanch Ashok Bolgundewar and many of the Anandwan HoD’s with their respective staff members filled the well looked after resting place of the late Baba Amte.
The dynamic and evergreen Kadu Guruji made a few welcoming remarks at the start and Sandhiniketan Dean Sadashiv Tajane encouraged the gathering to get back to their different Centres of Excellence, reminding all that for the late Baba Amte “Work was Worship”. Anandwan citizens on tricycles, wheel chairs, crutches and walking sticks were seen energetically returning to their respective production centres with determination, pride and zeal written all over their faces. The distinguished and inspiring citizens of our country over here continue to play a positive part in our nation-building enterprise.
