A couple of months back I had written about the necessity for implementing a nation-wide “Do Not Call Registry”. Some progress at last; in the wrong direction.
ICICI Bank has set up it’s version of the registry at http://www.inuonline.com/dnc/donotcall.asp. The form states:
From time to time, we at ICICI Bank, send you information on our latest products and services which we feel may be of interest to you. We use letters, e-mails or phones to convey such information. We respect your privacy, and appreciate if you do not want us to contact you over phone for any telemarketing activity. If that is so, you may use the Do Not Call form below to register your name and any of your phone number(s) that you want excluded from our calling lists.
The form ends with “No one from ICICI Bank will ever ask you to confirm these details.”. Great thinking else the very purpose of the system would be defeated.
Although a step forward it’s not the right approach. Just imagine the consequences if one has to register with each and every service provider. The right approach would be a central do-not-call database that could be accessed by individual telemarketing agencies.
